Kuressaare Castle

Kuressaare Castle tour

Kuressaare Private Walking Tour With Castle Visit Saaremaa’s capital, Kuressaare, is a charming small town that invites you on a journey back in time to the Middle Ages on a private walking tour. Kuressaare is best enjoyed with a quiet stroll from to enjoy the charming wooden villas, medieval town centre and the the castle. We begin our tour visiting the 14th-century Kuressaare Episcopal Castle, the best-preserved medieval fortress in the Baltics. The castle combined for many centuries the roles of Episcopal residence, a prison and a sanctuary. The basic 14th– century quadrangular structure took 40 years to build and the massive walls were added later in the 15th century. Enjoy panoramic views over the surroundings from the watch tower with a cake and a coffee in the Castle Tower Café.

After the visit to the castle, you will start your walking tour through the medieval streets of Kuressaare. You will view the main highlights of the town, including the town park, Pargi street, Lossi market place, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, St. Lawrence Church and two of the finest buildings in the capital: the 17th century Town Hall and the baroque style Weigh House. Pargi street and the Social Hall, located in the park in front of the Episcopal Castle, are the most charming remainders from the 19thcentury, when Kuressaare became a health resort. The open-air marketplace, where you will have a chance to do some shopping, is filled with foodstuff and native handicrafts, including a marvellous selection of famous Estonian handmade wool sweaters and mittens.

Saaremaa Highlights Private Tour- historical and cultural experience

Private tour to see the highlights of Saaremaa island: Kaali crater, Angla windmills, Panga cliff and a medieval Karja church. This tour is a classic must go to feel the spirit of the island. A post windmill is one of the symbols of Saaremaa – there used to be hundreds of them. On the tour we’ll see a rare but typical windmill hill in Angla heritage center.

Karja church – a rural church with the richest medieval stone sculpture decoration in all the Baltic states.

Another interesting sightseeing on the tour is the Kaali meteorite crater. This meteorite crater is one of the easiest in the world to access. We end our tour with one of the best views on Saaremaa on the 21 meter high Panga cliff.
